AboutBedBugs
What do bed bugs look like?
Adult bed bugs are dark brown or reddish in color; about the size of a grain of rice, but shaped like an apple seed. They are easy to see with the naked eye. Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller and clear. They can be as small as the head of a pin – still visible to the naked eye.

What do bed bug bites look like?
Bed bugs bite and suck blood from humans. Bed bugs are most active at night and bite any exposed areas of skin while an individual is sleeping. The face, neck, hands, and arms are common sites for bedbug bites. The bite itself is painless and is not noticed. Small, flat, or raised bumps on the skin are the most common sign; redness, swelling, and itching commonly occur. If scratched, the bite areas can become infected.

Bed bug bites may go unnoticed or be mistaken for flea or mosquito bites or other types of rash or skin conditions, since they are difficult to distinguish from other bites. Bed bugs also have glands whose secretions may leave odors, and they also may leave dark fecal spots on bed sheets and around their hiding places (in crevices or protected areas around the bed or anywhere in the room).

How do people get bed bugs?
The bugs are efficient hitchhikers and are usually carried into dwellings on luggage, clothing, shoes, beds, furniture, and other items. This is a high risk for hotels and apartments, where turnover of occupants is constant. Once bed bugs are in your home, property, or place of business, they can travel practically anywhere.

Why don’t I see bed bugs during the day?
Bed bugs prefer to feed on a calm and unsuspecting host. A human being in a deep sleep is an ideal opportunity for a meal. Typically, this would be late at night; however, if one’s sleep pattern is during the day, bed bugs will still feed. It is a matter of opportunity, not necessarily the time of day that matters.

How do I know if I have bed bugs?
People begin to suspect they have bed bugs when they show signs of bed bug bite marks. Bed bugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale, so humans and animals are prime targets for bed bugs to attack.
